to Strike down Propostion 8

On 28 February 2013 the Obama Administration filed a historic amicus brief regarding the Prop 8 case currently before the U.S. Supreme Court, Hollingsworth v. Perry. Lyle Denniston of SCOTUSblog.com provides an analysis of the brief: U.S. endorses limited gay marriage right.
In a Marriage Equality USA press release MEUSA Legal Director John Lewis said, “The Administration’s brief should carry great weight with the Court. The President of the United States has now made clear to the Justices of the Supreme Court that the United States Constitution prohibits Proposition 8’s exclusion of lesbian and gay couples from marriage. The already compelling case for the freedom to marry became even stronger today.”
“The Obama Administration’s words bring tremendous hope to same-sex couples seeking to marry in California; words that echo from coast to coast. The arguments advanced by the Administration today add authority and eloquence to the case to restore marriage equality in California and extend the freedom to marry nationwide,” concluded MEUSA™ Executive Director Brian Silva.
