Get to Know Us First
In the wake of California’s passage of Proposition 8, a group of gay and lesbian families took to the airwaves with 30-second Public Service Announcements (PSAs) that aired throughout the state. Their purpose was to capture the hearts and minds of people who do not understand why marriage is so important to us.
Our message:
- Marriage promotes families.
- Support marriage equality.
- Get to know us first

H.E.R.O. Phoenix
Human Equal Rights Organizers formed in Arizona in early November 2008 after the passage of Prop 102 in Arizona and Prop 8 in California, both defining marriage between man and a woman. We realized at that point, our community needed to be more visible and educated about the issues that we face. HERO does this by holding monthly town hall education panels, doing community service, and holding other events and rallies. We incorporated as a non-profit in Arizona in early 2010, and are in the process of filing the 501(c)(3) paperwork with the IRS.
Our Mission: To create all inclusive coalitions to secure equal rights through Service, Action, Visibility, and Education in local communities. The acronym for the four points is S.A.V.E.
Our Vision: A world free of discrimination with equal rights and dignity for all.

Mainers United for Marriage
The Maine Freedom to Marry Coalition is a broad coalition of groups and people working to win the freedom to marry for same-sex couples in Maine. We are united in our belief that marriage matters to the thousands of same-sex couples who call Maine home. We are united in our belief that allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples strengthens families and strengthens the state we love. And, we are united in our hope that the people of Maine will join us in supporting the freedom to marry for all of Maine’s loving, committed same-sex couples.
The Initiative: On Jan. 26, members of The Maine Freedom to Marry Coalition delivered more than 105,000 signatures to the Secretary of State to place a citizen’s initiative on the Nov. 6, 2012, ballot with the intent of allowing same-sex couples to receive a marriage license while also protecting religious freedom.
On Feb. 23, the Secretary of State confirmed that more than enough signatures had been collected to place the citizen’s initiative on the ballot.
The title of the Legislation is: “An Act to Allow Marriage Licenses for Same Sex Couples and Protect Religious Freedom.”
Mainers United for Marriage has proposed that the question read:
“Do you favor a law allowing marriage licenses for same-sex couples that protects religious freedom by ensuring no religion or clergy be required to perform such a marriage in violation of their religious beliefs?”
The final wording of the question will be determined by the Office of the Secretary of State after a public comment period.
The citizen’s initiative would allow same-sex couples to receive a marriage license in Maine. In addition, it also provides that no clery person or religious institution is required to perform or to host a marriage against his or her religious beliefs.

Marry Me Movement
The Marry Me Movement was inspired by a song, Marry Me, by the openly gay independent artist, Arro Verse, in celebration of President Obama's 2012 announcement in support of marriage equality. By supporting marriage equality through music and sports, we believe we can produce a healthier and more harmonious society for all.
Our goal is to film a documentary that tells the story of The Marry Me Movement, a movement that supports marriage equality by marrying America's favorite pastime with America's future. The Marry Me Movement's mission is to help strengthen communities across America in support of marriage equality using the creative elements of music and sports.
Our movement will travel the country and organize softball games in support of marriage equality. We are selecting diverse teams made of politicians, artists, spiritual leaders, community members, etc. all in support of our cause. Onsite, we will have multiple booths including voter registration, civil rights, and health awareness within the LGBT community. Net admission proceeds will be donated directly to non-profit organizations supporting LGBT civil rights.

One Iowa
Our mission is to support full equality for LGBT individuals living in Iowa through grassroots efforts and education. Formed in 2005, the organization has been an effective advocate for the community. In coalition with progressive and political allies, recent achievements include civil rights legislation to protect the LGBT community against employment and housing discrimination, safe schools legislation establishing anti-bullying policies in Iowa’s schools, and defeating anti-marriage legislation.
In the nearly three years since the Iowa Supreme Court’s unanimous Varnum ruling extended the freedom to marry to loving, committed lesbian and gay couples, Iowa has been at the forefront of the battle for marriage equality. Iowa plays the unique role of being the only Midwestern state that recognizes the marriages of gay and lesbian couples. White Knot for Equality
White Knot for Equality is a non-profit organization founded in November 2008 in response to the passing of Proposition 8 in California and bans on same-sex marriage and the denial of equal rights for LGBT persons across the nation and around the world.
White Knot for Equality's mission is to work to achieve equal rights for the LGBT population by: educating people on the importance of Marriage Equality, engaging people in the conversations needed to change hearts and minds, and showing the wide-spread support Marriage Equality truly has.
We believe in peaceful and conscientious displays of support wherever there is injustice. We support the work of other organizations by providing a tool for visibility and awareness to complement their activities.
The White Knot symbol takes two traditional symbols of marriage—white and tying the knot—and combines them. It is at once a proud display of a belief in basic human rights and an invitation to conversation. White Knots are now being worn in all 50 states and in 33 other countries around the world.
